Slaven Tolj’s exhibition in Split continues the exhibitions held last year in Bologna (Palazzo d’Acurssio), Rijeka (Gallery OK) and Zagreb (Institute for Contemporary Art), and on this occasion is supplemented with new works and artistic interventions. Exhibitions, just as with the artist’s works, build on each other. Namely,‘today when he exhibits his earlier works or parts of them, Tolj does not treat them retrospectively but associatively. They are carefully chosen because they are directly related to some situations, phenomena, ideas and predictions that are haunting the artist or that he is currently living with’. According to the works, the artist seems to transpose his personal and complex poetics into the underground world. ‘Whether it is about people who are in his mind or things that he resurrects with archaeological methods, or life circumstances and situations, we will notice that death, being worn out, spent — everything that has been brought to an end, is in a permanent associative connection with his everyday life’ (quote from Helena Puhara’s text).

Slaven Tolj (born 1964) articulates his work in several fields of art, including performance, actions, ambient and site-specific installations and objects. He uses real space, and encountered and found objects, incorporating time into his work and using his own body. His art mainly deals with social themes, themes of identity, the past, human vulnerability, loneliness and death. He has exhibited in numerous individual and group exhibitions around the country and abroad. Besides his work in art, he is known to the public as an exhibition curator, co-founder of the Art Workshop Lazareti in Dubrovnik and Institute of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatian selector of the Venice Biennale of Fine Arts in 2005 and former director of MMSU Rijeka.

The first festival of visual culture Cyan takes place in the Amphitheater of the Youth Center in Split, from November 24. until 25.11. The organizer of the festival is the Design hub Split initiative, which brings together a community of designers and experts in visual communication.

Through our activities, we try to empower the community through various lectures and exhibitions. This conference is a step forward for the association, because for the first time we are bringing foreign lecturers and we are trying to build and expand the community of professionals and experts in the field of design, said the Design hub association.

The lecturers at this year’s Cyan festival are experts from various professions, architects, animators, graphic designers, photographers, typographers, sociologists and others who should collaborate on projects and raise quality together.

The best indicator of the association’s ambitions are the first announced foreign guests, namely Studio Dumbar from the Netherlands. Studio Dumbar is an established design agency with more than twenty years of experience in corporate and brand identity, and they have worked for many clients around the world on projects that require international implementation.

The portfolio includes prestigious projects and clients such as Utah Jazz, Branding The Netherland, NS — Dutch Railways, Club Brugge KV, Van Gogh Museum, Aegon, Shell, TNT Post Group, Czech Telecom, Nike, Dresdner Bank, Danish Post, Allianz, AT&T – Unisource, Apple Computer, Crédit Lyonnais, European Central Bank, Randstad International and others.

Cirkus Kolektiv, as part of the annual residency program, presents a work-in-progress presentation of creation TIRA by the international company La Barque Acide.

ARTISTS ABOUT THEIR CREATION TIRA:
Tira is a game about the curiosity of establishing new limits in your own world. It is drawing limits for the pleasure of breaking them.

Tira is sincerity, it is the complicity of the looks.

Tira is transformation, a string becomes everything: the kiss of the grandmother you hated so much when you were little, the caress of someone who is no longer there, the realisation that you are not the woman they expected you to be, but in the end it’s not so bad…

ARTISTS AND THEIR BIOGRAPHY:
Maci got to know the circus at the age of 23. She discovered it, saw it and fell in love with it. She attended the circus school Vertigo in Turin and later she simultaneously studied at Le Lido, a circus school in Toulouse and at the Jean Jaurès University. In 2022/2023 he worked on the creation of the 27th Circ d’Hivern, “fam” of the Ateneu de Nou Barris (Barcelona).

Since she was a child, Carla has been attracted to the arts. She is born in Valladolid, Spain. She studied at the University of Fine Arts in Salamanca. Later she enrolled in the circus school Le Lido, motivated by juggling and the body as a tool for emotional language. Carla developed her work in Olot (Spain) with Iris Ziordia, known for her innovative approach to juggling and emotion.

La Barque Acide is a company born in 2018 in Toulouse, with. 9 artists the 25th promotion of Lido. The company made its debut at La Grainerie in 2021 with the show “The end is Nigh”.

Three new projects are currently being created: “Croquette corps cornichon” by Stephanie and Camille Bontout-Mouat, “Pacemaker” by Marcelo Nunes and “Tira” by Carla Carnerero Huertas and Maria Celeste Funghi.

_

Artist in residence programme is created to provide different artists support for creation and at the same time creating a local contemporary circus programme through production support and education.

The program is supported by the Foundation Kultura nova, City of Split, Ministry of Culture and Media, Split-Dalmatia county.

Nejc will teach us the basics of Lindy Hop, the most popular swing dance.

The workshop will take place on July 14, 2023, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. But that’s not all! After the workshop, we’ll have a dance party where you can practice and apply your newly acquired skills!

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced dancer, this workshop is open to everyone who loves dancing and wants to explore the world of swing.

NEJC ZUPAN:
Nejc started swing dancing back in 2003 as a result of his contemporary dance experience and a strong love for jazz music. Because of this, he became the main culprit for the popularization of Lindy Hop, Blues and Balboa in Slovenia in the early 2000s. His Swing dance experience is a collection of endless research into different dance forms, many international workshops and his humble willingness to keep learning from anybody willing to teach him. In the past decade, he has taught all over Europe with some of the most talented teachers around and has supported new growing swing scenes in numerous countries. He is known for his elegant and smooth style of dancing as he pays special attention to jazz movement, history and musicality, both quintessential to any Swing dance form.

► AERIAL HOOP (90 min): A mixture of intricate fabric moves mixed with high impact moves await in this 90 minute, intermediate workshop! Some sequences will challenge your power, others will rely on your brain ability to remember where everything goes. Some drops, some spins, some splits, we will cover a variety of movements styles and types; there’s something for everyone here! Students should be able to constantly invert in the air, and be comfortable with basic drops and movements.

► AERIAL SILK (90 min): In this 90 minuted, intermediate hoop workshop we will cover a variety of moves and skills. We will start with some fun, quirky poses and flows before working on some harder movements (or progressions to help you get there on your own). Finally, we will finish with some spinning techniques! Students should be able to already mount the hoop and be comfortable with being on the top bar.

► AERIAL CONDITIONING (60 min): In this 60 minute workshop we will cover a variety to strength exercises to increase your aerial power and stamina. These exercises are good for most aerial apparatus, and can be modified for all levels of current strength. Some will work on large muscle groups, while others will be focused on smaller muscle isolations and mobility. Technique is key, and the focus will be on teaching you proper alignment so you can continue to improve for beyond the workshop. Please arrive 10/15 minutes early to warm yourself up before this workshop starts.

From October 24–27, 2022, the final part of the FLOWING CONNECTIONS (FLOC) project will be held in the city of Split and its surroundings. It is the last stop of a three-year international collaborative project that dealt with issues of creative reuse of modernist and post-industrial spaces in post-socialist Europe. After the OSTRALE biennale in Dresden and exhibitions in Budapest and Kaunas, we are organizing a series of public events in Split:

◦ MONDAY, 24.10. at 6 p.m. > RAZRED/ HOME OF THE YOUTH > presentation of the FLOC project : OSTRALE biennale O21 in Dresden and its iterations in Budapest and Kaunas with the theme “curating in pandemic/ isolation”. We will also present a program of artistic residencies in Budapest and announce an exchange with Art Quarter Budapest in 2023.

◦ WEDNESDAY, 26.10. at 7 p.m. > LECTURE AND CONVERSATION AT THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, SPLIT > Marija Dremaite (Vilnius): MODERNISM FOR THE FUTURE (see more below for details)

◦ THURSDAY, 27.10. at 11 a.m. — organized trip to Krvavica, visit to the former Children’s health resort built in 1964, designed by the architect Rikard Marasović. From today we accept applications for the tour exclusively by email > slobodne.veze@gmail.com
-

Slobodne veze/ Loose Associations and their associates have been dealing with issues of critical reevaluation and preservation of the modernist architectural heritage of the second half of the 20th century through the activities of the MOTEL TROGIR project. The project consists of many activities and has developed a specific methodology which can be described as a combination of civic activism and scientific, publishing and educational work, including curating and producing contemporary art projects.

At the beginning of 2020, Slobodne veze were invited to (co)curate the international contemporary art biennial in Dresden OSTRALE O21: BREATHTURN. A large international exhibition took place in one of the neglected modernist buildings in the center of Dresden — the former workers’ canteen of the ROBOTRON factory, an important city point from the GDR period. The exhibition brought together over 130 artists from all over the world, and the biennale then had iterations in the Budapest Art Quarter (aqb) and in Kaunas (Kaunas 2022 European Capital of Culture ). Modernist architecture and reflections about its future (and creative reuse) is the red line that connects Dresden, Budapest, Kaunas and Split.

The meeting of the partners of the FLOWING CONNECTIONS project in Split is conceived as a sort of recapitulation of three years of cooperation, but also as a public platform for discussing common topics. In addition to the above-mentioned events, which are open to the public, an artistic residency of the KOLXOZ Colletive (Prague, Chisinau, Tiraspol) is organized, as well as a series of internal meetings, tours and networking with actors of the local cultural scene. Kaunas 2022, this year’s European Capital of Culture, is one of the project partners that, with its focus on the interwar modernism of the city, through the program line MODERNISM FOR THE FUTURE, opens up a number of interesting topics. With a number of experts, an interdisciplinary project has been developed to nominate modernist districts of Kaunas for UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. The lecture of Professor Marija Dremaita from the University of Vilnius will present the “phenomenon of the city of Kaunas” and its influence on the modernism of the middle and second half of the 20th century in Lithuania, touching on the “controversial” Soviet modernist legacy. The lecture is at the same time a link to the penultimate stop of the FLOC project and a contribution to bringing together geographically distant areas with similar preoccupations regarding the protection of modernist architectural and other cultural heritage.

Organization: Slobodne veze/ Loose Associations

This year’s ISPOD BINE sound art festival offers two weeks of various events at several locations in the Youth Center in Split: concerts, multimedia exhibitions, lectures and workshops.

The conceptual backbone of all these events is experimentation with sound.

The festival begins with a collaboration with Platformat, a festival for independent culture, organized by the Platforma Doma mladih (Youth Center Platform). These two festivals together have invited the House of Extreme Music Theater by DB Indoš to the underground club Kocka, and this time with the participation of the legendary band Trobecove krušne peći. KUŽNI IFRIT is a cosmophonic performance that emerged from joint work for remote performances of DEMONI KUGE, and premiered in early 2022 in the Great Hall of Pogon Jedinstvo in Zagreb.
The unique feature of this year’s ISPOD BINE festival is that it will present local, Split artists of different generations and artistic expressions. Each of them premieres a new creative work created exclusively for the ISPOD BINE festival. On October 13 from noon to 3pm, the festival events spread throughout the city of Split, using a moving audio installation by the legends of the Split art scene, Milan Brkić and Rino Efendić.

On Friday, October 14, Gordan Tudor, a saxophonist from Split with an international career, will perform his Soliloquy at Beton Kino, and on Saturday, October 15, Toni Mijač, an artist of the younger generation, will open his multimedia exhibition “Turn into an ear” in the MKC Gallery. At the very closing of the festival, October 23, we present another legend of Split’s independent scene, Hrvoje Cokarić (c_bastard), who will give us his sound performance “armageddon torch” in Kocka.

In addition to the forces of Split, which the festival continuously supports and promotes, and encourages them to experiment with sound outside of their native artistic media, this year ISPOD BINE presents the work of Miodrag Gladović, an electrical engineer, musician, and multimedia artist, who is extremely active on the contemporary art scene. either as a member of the artistic duo Lightune.G with Bojan Gagić, or independently. With his work, engineering knowledge, and exceptional creativity, he continuously contributes to the innovation of the projects in which he participates. The combination of a punk approach and DIY ethics, two decades of musical experience in stylistically different bands and projects, incorporation and use of new technologies in artistic work, and sensibility for contemporary music and art — these are all reasons why Gladović has become one of the most prominent names of the contemporary scene, primarily experimental and improvisational music, and in Split, he will hold a lecture about his work and perform his audiovisual performance “Packmess”.

So that this year’s festival does not go without international guest appearances by established sound artists, this year we present Manja Ristić, an internationally active artist who, since her institutional training as a violinist, is now very active in the improv and experimental music scene, and is represented by the audiovisual installation “Good Water” which will be opened in the Kocka Gallery on October 21, followed by Igor Stanglitzki’s impro soundscape journey.

Finally, the festival brings musician Amy Denio from Seattle, who is best known as a saxophonist in the band Kultur Shock. This versatile artist, in addition to playing several instruments and permanently engaging in pedagogical work, also performing vocal improvisations, will be in Split on Sunday, October 23, to do a vocal improv workshop for the public, and after that a solo performance in which she will immediately incorporate recordings of vocal improvisations with the participants of the workshop.

The sound art festival ISPOD BINE was founded and led by Natasha Kadin and Hrvoje Pelicarić since 2016, it is organized by the Mavena association, and this year it is held in partnership with the Multimedia Cultural Center Split, the Youth Center Platform, the Coalition of Youth Associations and with the financial support of the City of Split and the Ministry of culture and media of the Republic of Croatia. The authors of the festival logo are Kazinoti&Komenda, this year’s visual identity was designed by Igor Stanglitzky, and the poster was screen-printed by Edi Matić, E.m.gra, while the animations were done by Tihana Mandušić.

Pawel Zukowski is an artist and activist who uses simple found materials in his work, such as cardboard from discarded boxes, boards from discarded pieces of furniture, posters and fabric. As a scholarship holder, the first one from Eastern Europe, this year he stayed at the Tom of Finland Foundation, where he researched their extensive archives of gay erotica. Referring to his own protest aesthetics, the author uses archival materials from which he creates new works, based on both queer anger and queer pleasure, works that not only bring us closer to a historical moment that the author came to know through the archives but works that resonate even today, calling for political engagement.

The exhibition can be viewed until July 30 from 19 to 21h. The exhibited works were created with the support of the Tom of Finland Foundation.
