From 21st to 25th March 2022, a dramaturgy workshop for contemporary circus artists with renowned circus playwright, director, professor and artist Robert Magro will be organized in Split, Croatia.

The dramaturgy workshop will bring together between 10 and 15 contemporary circus artists from Croatia, the region and other European countries. Those artists who already have experience in creating circus productions and are eager for additional knowledge, which is not technical but creative, will be selected for this workshop.

The basis of the circus artists’ education is the flexibility of their vocabulary, which is poor in the number of figures compared to theatre and dance. Therefore, contemporary circus artists can be creative only if they know how to transform and make their vocabulary as flexible and diverse as possible through specific training. The characteristic of the circus artists is that they speak through metaphors and try to discover still unexplored parts of the human soul to provoke a new emotion which they convey to us with their technique. With the help of their physical fitness and skills, through manipulation, gesture, choreography or movement, in short, with the help of their whole bodies, the circus artists creates images that the audience is invited to experience, feel, decipher …

The workshop is free of charge for selected participants. Lunch is organized for participants, and travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed to participants in full amount or partially (depending on the final budget of the activity).

The working language of the workshop is English.
Workshop participants are selected according to their CV and motivation letter via the form:
https: //forms.gle/uhiPSAcUvpJVi4qw5
The application deadline is March 1st, 2022 at noon.
The list of workshop participants will be published on March 8, 2022.

Workshop schedule: every day in two intervals — from 09:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 16:00 / group and individual work. Lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00.

About the teacher:
Roberto Magro works as a circus playwright, director, professor and artist in various countries.
After graduating from prestigious Academie Fratellini, he was part of the collective “Les Oiseaux Fous” with which he travelled Europe before founding his own group “Rital Brocante”. His high affinity for knowledge transfer and reflection on artistic creation led him to become artistic director of the Flic Circus School in Turin between 2005 and 2011. He found a balance between his work as a pedagogue and the role of playwright and directed performances for many artists and collective. He created “Era, Sonnet for a clown” with the MagdaClan collective and participated in several artistic creations of contemporary circus collectives “eia”, “Psirc”, “Forman Brothers”, “Nos no Bambu”, “Circo no Ato” and many others. He is the initiator of the Brocante Festival. He settled in Barcelona in 2013 to take over the artistic direction of “La Central del Circ”, the centre for the development of contemporary circus in Catalonia, for two years. At the end of his mandate, he continued his journey and his work as a creator and pedagogue.

He teaches regularly in circus schools in Europe and Latin America. In 2016, he staged performances for several European schools: “Life” (Codarts, Rotterdam), “Dia” (Flic, Turin), “Un minuto” (ESAC, Brussels).
This workshop is part of “The National Circus Platform”, the first collaborative program platform in Croatia that brings together organizations in the contemporary circus sector. The platform responds to the challenges faced by organizations and artists working in the sector through various forms of program exchange and cooperation and the transfer of knowledge and experience among members. The platform is coordinated by ROOM 100 collective (Split), and the members are Cirkorama (Zagreb), Cirkultura (Samobor), Cirkus Kolektiv (Split), Čarobnjakov šešir (Pula), K.V.A.R.K. (Križevci), Prostor Plus (Rijeka) and the newly established Contemporary Circus Artists Association (Zagreb). The activities of the National Circus Platform are carried out with the financial support of the Kultura Nova Foundation.

Augusto is an artist who, following the footsteps of his mother (a stage artist of the 50s), seeks his place under the spotlight. Impatient in his search for applause, he is finally given the opportunity when he becomes Bingo, a TV presenter in a popular children’s show. Bingo grows into an absolute star in Brazil, but a clause in August’s contract forbids him from revealing his identity. Augusto becomes an anonymous celebrity. This film, inspired by the true story of Arlind Barrett, one of the many actors who portrayed Bozo The Clown in Brazil, is a surreal story of a man who fails in character as he grabs artistic fame.

“Bingo: The King of the Mornings” won the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize in 2018, where it won all the key awards: for best film, best lead and supporting actor, best editing, set design, costume design and make-up. The film was also a Brazilian Oscar nominee.

The film is shown with Croatian and English subtitles.

Kino Cirkus is an educational film program of the contemporary circus collective Split ROOM 100, with which the audience can expand their knowledge about the layers of circus art, its significance, history and development.
Kino Cirkus is realized with the financial support of the Croatian Audiovisual Center. The screening at the Bačvice Open-Air Cinema is being realized in cooperation with Kino Mediteran and the Golden Gate Center for Culture and Lifelong Learning.

The “Horror House Project” trilogy presents the circus artist’s view of life and the matter from which life is woven. Existential fringe, politics, desires and dreams are some of the topics he deals with with the intention of drawing the viewer into contemporary circus everyday life.

The first part — “Salto Mortale” presents the author’s personal view of the art of the circus, as the struggle of man and gravity, sleep and reality, the projection of the mind and bodily limitations, the impossible and possible. “Salto Mortale” tries to conjure up a series of situations from which, through collage text formats, audio-video effects and vertical choreography, the marginal situations of circus artists’ work are shown. Through the five stations of this journey, the authors tell some of their own, some of others and some imaginary stories. They place each story in space and tie it to a prop close to the artist who is the story; mobile home, chest, wall, curtain, rope …

“Salto Mortale” had its premiere in Zagreb, through 6 consecutive performances in March 2020. In 5 residency days in Split, in a secret location, the authors / performers are adapting the performance for the exterior in which they will perform it for the Split audience.

The play will be performed six times, on July 29 and 30, 2020 at 9:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m.

Each of the performances of the play “Horror House Project” is performed in front of 5 spectators who, together with the performers, go through all the steps of this play.
Date and date reservation form for groups.

In addition to the groups “Five friends in the circus” :), each of the performances can be watched by 20 people (acquaintances / strangers) who have the usual role of “silent” spectators in the audience.
The ticket price is 30.00 kn.

Marja Ahti is an artist working with field recordings and other acoustic sound material combined with synthesizers and electronic feedback, investigating the border where sounds start to mimic each other or communicate. She creates precise musical narratives with slowly mutating textures of detailed acoustic sound and intuitively tuned sustained tones with gentle microtonal beatings. She works with field recordings in a neither documentaristic nor purely acousmatic way, but rather starting out from in between these approaches, hovering between abstraction and the deeply familiar, moving into a realm of poetic metaphor where sounds are set in relation to each other, fleetingly mirroring and shadow-dancing.

Ahti has been performing in numerous festivals and events in Europe, USA and japan. Ahti has been a part of the Finnish experimental music scene for more than ten years in different constellations and is currently active in the duo Ahti & Ahti with her partner and as member of the Himera collective. With her debut LP under her own name, Vegetal Negatives, out in March this year on the Swiss label Hallow Ground, Ahti explores a new formal language and sonic palette that ventures far off the path of her earlier work.

The entrance is free!

The program is realized with the help of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the City of Split. ROOM 100 is supported by Foundation Kultura nova, and Marja Ahti performance is realized in cooperation with Multimedijalni kulturni centar Split
