The first festival of visual culture Cyan takes place in the Amphitheater of the Youth Center in Split, from November 24. until 25.11. The organizer of the festival is the Design hub Split initiative, which brings together a community of designers and experts in visual communication.

Through our activities, we try to empower the community through various lectures and exhibitions. This conference is a step forward for the association, because for the first time we are bringing foreign lecturers and we are trying to build and expand the community of professionals and experts in the field of design, said the Design hub association.

The lecturers at this year’s Cyan festival are experts from various professions, architects, animators, graphic designers, photographers, typographers, sociologists and others who should collaborate on projects and raise quality together.

The best indicator of the association’s ambitions are the first announced foreign guests, namely Studio Dumbar from the Netherlands. Studio Dumbar is an established design agency with more than twenty years of experience in corporate and brand identity, and they have worked for many clients around the world on projects that require international implementation.

The portfolio includes prestigious projects and clients such as Utah Jazz, Branding The Netherland, NS — Dutch Railways, Club Brugge KV, Van Gogh Museum, Aegon, Shell, TNT Post Group, Czech Telecom, Nike, Dresdner Bank, Danish Post, Allianz, AT&T – Unisource, Apple Computer, Crédit Lyonnais, European Central Bank, Randstad International and others.

The show brings gender issues closer to people by forgetting the individualism and showing that we are all the same. On stage, you can see male and female bodies, but only one mind that works in unison.

Sabotage is a performing art piece filled with propositions and visually stimulating images. Sabotage creates a world where actions become a dance between tension and release.

Sabotage is exploring our similarities and how different bodies work. We can’t deny that circus has strong masculine traits. Sabotage highlights the gentle, beautiful and fragile aspects, creating a world where labels of women and men are disassembled.

As humans we want to control ourselves, the person next to us and the world we are living in. Everyone and everything is under control, it’s the forest behind your house, it’s your doctor and the person you see in the mirror.

Sabotage is introducing a new circus discipline to the world, called “Nest”. It’s created by Saana Leppänen. Nest is knotted together using cyr wheel and four ropes all hanging from one point.

Performance is inspired by Henry Fuseli painting Nightmare.

Circus disciplines: vertical rope, cyr wheel, hand to hand, dance acrobatics, perch pole, hair hanging and Nest (multiply rope structure created around cyr wheel)

Artist & director: Saana Leppänen (FI), Kert Ridaste (EE), Lars Schmidt (DE)

Co-producer: Sirkus Aikamoinen, PartnerAkro

Residency support: Näyttämö (Finland), Subtopia (Sweden), Kam Hram (Croatia), PartnerAkro (Estonia)

Sound design: Lars Schmidt

Performance length: 55 minutes

Recommended audience: all ages

About artist:

Kert Ridaste and Saana Leppänen are coming from countries close to each other, Estonia and Finland.
Both started at early age in local youth circus. While Kert was in OMAtsirkus emphasizing movement and dancing and competing in partner acrobatics, Saana was in Sorin Sirkus focusing on aerials and expressing herself on stage trough theater.

Their roads met in Dance and Circus University at Stockholm (DOCH) where they graduated together at 2018 with disciplines of hand to hand, dance acrobatics and vertical rope. Yet both of them have their own colorful background they realized the enjoyment of moving, creating and at the end performing together. Therefore they decided to work towards full length circus show and let other people see the roughness, beauty and fragility of these two bodies.

* Circus SaboK residence is part of Artist in residence programme.
Artist in residence programme is created to provide different artists support for creation and at the same time creating local contemporary circus programme through production support and education.

Program is supported by the Foundation Kultura nova, City of Split, Split-Dalmatia county. Programme is part of the project “Gradimo Dom zajedno”, founded by European union through European social fund.

ZVUK 100 is a new experimental music and performing program run by contemporary circus collective ROOM 100 with an aim to introduce experimental and ambiance electronic music to the local community and tourists in Split and surrounding cities. ZVUK 100 hosts different musicians/artists from Croatia, region and Europe and on June 27th 2019 we are hosting Swedish-Finnish artist Marja Ahti.

Marja Ahti is an artist working with field recordings and other acoustic sound material combined with synthesizers and electronic feedback, investigating the border where sounds start to mimic each other or communicate. She creates precise musical narratives with slowly mutating textures of detailed acoustic sound and intuitively tuned sustained tones with gentle microtonal beatings. She works with field recordings in a neither documentaristic nor purely acousmatic way, but rather starting out from in between these approaches, hovering between abstraction and the deeply familiar, moving into a realm of poetic metaphor where sounds are set in relation to each other, fleetingly mirroring and shadow-dancing.

Web
Bandcamp

Ahti has been performing in numerous festivals and events in Europe, USA and japan. Ahti has been a part of the Finnish experimental music scene for more than ten years in different constellations and is currently active in the duo Ahti & Ahti with her partner and as member of the Himera collective. With her debut LP under her own name, Vegetal Negatives, out in March this year on the Swiss label Hallow Ground, Ahti explores a new formal language and sonic palette that ventures far off the path of her earlier work.

The entrance is free!

The program is realized with the help of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the City of Split. ROOM 100 is supported by Foundation Kultura nova, and Marja Ahti performance is realized in cooperation with Multimedijalni kulturni centar Split

Need Your Love So Bad is a famous blues ballad composed way back in 1955. Multiple covers of the tune exist, but the most famous one is by Fleetwood Mac from 1968, which Niko Mihaljević uses as a basis for his performance. Despite its name and context, this piece does not rely on anything melancholic, romantic or particularly autobiographical. As the author explains, it is a calculated creation of artificial melancholy which was originally a product of leisure and some abstract sentimentality. Niko Mihaljević spent part of 2017 in New York as a winner of the Radoslav Putar Art Award, the most prestigious award for young Croatian artists. In this period he began working on the concept and “practicing” for this performance. He has always been fascinated with the ready-made aesthetics of the cheap MIDI background he accidentally found on YouTube, which he used as a basis for the whistling exercises.
Besides all this, through his work Mihaljević often questions the seriality of artistic avant-gardes and early conceptual works, with the ever-present humor and a certain trying-out of concept, just as the first conceptual artists, especially performing artists, had done. Niko whistles the three-minute song not once, not twice, but 10 times in a row, completing his performance piece, questioning the audience’s attention and focus, while playing with the atmosphere he created, evidently enjoying himself. As far as setting up the scenery, the allusion to the minimalist “karaoke aesthetics” is clear – taking into account the lack of a proper backing track and the person separated from the crowd, vocalizing – in which a form of benign popular entertainment is deliberately put into the context of contemporary art, and now the audience needs to withstand the constant repetition of the same vocal pattern.
Although this piece of music is formally completely benign – it is neither loud, dissonant, abstract, complex, nor pretentious, it does not annoy us in any way – except by repetition.
Niko Mihaljević was born in Split, and although spending his entire career outside of his hometown, he now returns to whistle his repetitive melody in hopes of prompting a reaction from the famously tough Split audience. Will they boo him, join him or simply leave the space of the Amphitheater before the end of the piece – remains to be seen.

Niko Mihaljević (Split, 1985) is a conceptual artist and graphic designer. He graduated from the Werkplaats Typografie (ArtEZ Institute of the Arts) in Arhhem, Holland. He is the winner of the 2016 Radoslav Putar Young Visual Artists Award. His recent projects include the avant-garde karaoke performance “Need Your Love So Bad” (2017) and “Circumnavigare necesse est, vivere non est necesse” (2016), a philosophical dialogue which proves the island of Prvić is indeed a land mass surrounded by the sea from all ends. He also studies and documents vernacular amateur graphic design and typography (“A wide variety of Italian pants: Zagreb’s A4 street design”, 2016). He is the founder of the Crystal Skull Museum. He composes esoteric synthesizer recitals as Soft Temple II. He works as a freelance graphic designer and an associate professor at the Media Design Department at University North.

It happens… is a solo trapeze act based on movement research and theatre. It happens is a personal piece, a creation with an own life that happens to happen, a tiny peep into the life of Júlia, the performer. It happens… is a dialogue between success and failure, beauty and shame, serenity and frustration. Through the vocabulary of movement and comedy, this act highlights the powerful fragility of the times where everything is in harmony. It happens… is a physical metaphor for the perfectly imperfect human condition: If everything seems to be going well, you have probably overlooked something, nothing is perfect, nobody is perfect, it happens…

trailer: https://vimeo.com/289926581

As a maker, when she creates a piece, it is always a very personal process and even if she is presenting a solo, she tries to understand it as a collective creation with her audience. She wants her audience to be fully involved in the act, either because they relate to what is happening emotionally or literally being involved. She is interested in presenting the conflicts, contrasts and paradoxes that define people. She takes her skills on stage as tools to create situations that highlight all these contradictions that fascinate her. She is interested in showing the most human side of herself, a woman, a performer, the one that might open a door to reflection.
When she is on stage, it is important for her to find a balance between humbleness and security to share the work with the audience.

The show is performed by Julia Campistany and Remi Lebocey as a result of two week long residency period, organized by Kulturna alternativa mladih Hram.
